Gula Darah Tinggi Memicu Penyakit Jantung

Bagi kebanyakan penderita diabetes, meningkatnya gula darah sesudah makan sering dianggap suatu yang lumrah, sekalipun angkanya menembus batas normal yakni 140 mg/dL. Namun, pada tahun 2007 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) mengeluarkan satu rekomendasi bagi penyandang diabetes yang menekankan petingnya menjaga gula darah sesudah makan. Karena tingginya gula darah sesudah makan, dilaporkan berkaitan erat dengan komplikasi penyakit jantung koroner. Penyakit jantung diketahui merupakan penyebab kematian terbesar bagi para penderita diabetes.

Pada orang normal, kondisi gula darah telah diatur sedemikian rupa oleh tubuh, sehingga jika gula darah meningkat sesudah makan, maka akan dilepas hormom insulin untuk menurunkannya. Gula darah naik sesudah makan pada orang normal tidak akan melebihi 140 mg/dL, dan akan turun dalam 2 jam sesudanhnya karena dimetabolisme oleh tubuh.

Namun pada penderita diabetes, kontrol tubuh terhadap kenaikan gula darah sangat buruk. Setelah makan gula darah yang naik akan tetap bertahan tinggi dalam jangka waktu yang agak lama, hal ini dikarenakan tubuh tidak cukup memiliki hormon insulin yang bertugas menurunkan gula darah atau mungkin tidak ada insulin sama sekali yang diproduksi oleh organ pankreas

Aktivitas fisik mengatur pola makan dan menjaga berat badan merupakan elemen penting dalam manajemen diabetes yang efektif. Namun demikian, tetap fokus utama dokter adalah mengarahkan pasien aga menjaga gaya hidup sehat
